Brent Crosses $100: The Stagflation Re-Arm Trigger Fires on the Eve of the Fed Binary

The pre-registered trigger crossed. Brent November futures settled above $100/barrel for the first time since July, after the US destroyed five Iranian crude tankers in retaliation for a missile attack on an American warship. Iran claimed — and Washington denied — strikes on two US vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. This was the framework's stagflation re-arm threshold: a sustained close above $100 re-arms the defensive path (Path B) globally, and it fired one day before the PPI print that begins the decisive Fed binary of the month.

WHY THIS OIL SHOCK IS STRUCTURALLY DIFFERENT

Three features distinguish the 2026 energy shock from a routine geopolitical spike:

  1. Physical flows, not just risk premium. Hormuz transits have collapsed from ~20M to 6-8M bpd — the lowest since May. This is tanker warfare constricting actual barrels, not headlines moving paper. Goldman raised its Brent forecast +$5 and sees disruption extending into 2027.

  2. The fuel-cost floor is already in the data. Record Labor Day gasoline ($4.03/gal, topping 2012's record), European diesel cracks above $100/bbl (all-time high), US diesel above the 2022 peak. Energy inflation is in September's prints regardless of what happens next week.

  3. No supply response valve. OPEC+ hiked supply into the war; Saudi facilities have been struck; the strategic reserve is a one-shot tool. The marginal barrel is now a war-risk barrel.

THE FED BINARY JUST GOT HARDER

September's PPI (Thursday) and CPI (Friday) were always the decisive prints for the Warsh Fed — Waller's hold case was explicitly contingent on soft inflation data. The fuel floor argues hot. A hot PPI/CPI + 10Y above 4.85% + Brent above $100 completes the three-condition arming of the defensive path: SPX 7,657 → 7,629 → 7,600, and a close below 7,600 with VIX above 17 opens the cascade to 7,450 — the line in the sand. The SPX closed Tuesday at 7,673.52, a second consecutive close below the 7,718 gamma flip, with VIX at 16.41 and rising. Two of the three defensive conditions are near-miss: 10Y 4.78-4.80% (trigger 4.85%), VIX 16.41 (trigger 17).

THE POLICY TOOLKIT IS POINTING THE WRONG WAY

Today brings the first operation of the Treasury's doubled long-dated buyback program — a demand-side tool fighting a supply-side shock. The same day, Treasury Secretary Bessent declared "I am the house now," warning traders not to bet against the yen — an unprecedented US Treasury FX backstop for the carry trade. Both are liquidity-administration measures. Neither produces barrels of oil or lowers the price of diesel. When the marginal price of risk is set by war and fuel rather than by discount rates, central bank and Treasury tools can smooth the path but not the shock.

TOMORROW'S CONVERGENCE

Thursday stacks three events: the ECB decision (a 25bp hike to 2.50% is fully priced; the trade is the "then done" 2027 path), Oracle earnings (AI capex referendum #3 — watch capex/OCF and any residual-value-guarantee analogs after Broadcom's disclosure, with IG spreads vs the 250bps stress threshold), and PPI. The AI funding spiral and the energy shock are no longer separate stories: Alphabet and Amazon now account for over a quarter of Swiss franc corporate issuance, while AI labs lobby for IG credit ratings — credit absorption competing with a sovereign buyer base that NBIM says "ain't what it was."

POSITIONING UNCHANGED, HEDGES PAYING

The framework's posture is neutral-defensive with triggers armed: no long additions above 7,718 without breadth (R2K above 3,030 and adv/decl above 1.8:1 — both failing at ~2,947 and 0.9:1), convexity fully maintained (VIX calls, SPX put spreads), energy longs the only core position working (XLE 64.77, RSI 66). Gold broke its 100-day EMA on real-yield pressure while silver's +25% energy-inflation spike shows the divergence. The buyback op result and tomorrow's prints decide whether this is a re-test of the range or the beginning of the walk to 7,450.
